The present paper aims to promote an understanding of relatively recent social phenomena such as cybercrime. Modern global realities of
technological advancements and heavy dependence on digital tools
emphasize threats cybercrime presents. Therefore, it is important to
examine factors driving cybercrime rates to create effective preventive
mechanisms. The paper uses regression analysis built on the recently published, first-ever World Cybercrime Index. Cybercrime scores of
94 countries were analyzed based on the effect of 6 predictor variables. Analysis displayed that the degree of economic freedom has an
inverse effect on cybercrime scores, and innovation level directly increases cybercrime rates with less probability. It is recommended for
researchers interested in the topic to be attentive to future releases of
WCI to be able to conduct more massive, time-series analysis.

Modern global social and development environments can be
described as an era of technological advancements. The daily
lives of billions of people are strongly influenced by technology. Most industries and sectors’ operations heavily depend on computing systems and technological advancements. Such environment promoted
the creation of a relatively recent form of
delinquency called cybercrime. Cybercrime encompasses a wide range of illegal
activities carried out using digital devices
or networks. Such activities include various
forms of fraud, identity theft, data breaches, computer viruses, scams, and expanded
upon in other malicious acts. Similarly to
other social occurrences, there are specific
reasons and factors driving rates of cybercrime and pushing cybercriminals towards
committing illegal activities. It is important
to examine the factors influencing the rates
of cybercrime across the globe in order to
be able to identify conditions encouraging
an expansion of digital crimes and prevent
them from occurring. Moreover, the economic conditions of people are often one of
the main reasons pushing them to commit
malicious acts. Additionally, the fields of
cyber forensics and criminalistics have become essential in addressing cybercrime.
These disciplines focus on the identification, collection, and analysis of digital evidence, which is crucial for tracking cybercriminal activities and developing effective
preventive measures. The present research
aims to find the relationship between various economic and social factors and the
rates of cybercrime across the globe.
